Dr Chau Chak Wing attends 'Education for Shared Societies Policy Dialogue with WLA – CdM
26th October,2018
Dr. Chau Chak Wing recently attended the 2018 Policy Dialogue organised by the World leadership Alliance - Club de Madrid (WLA - CdM) in partnership with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, under the High Patronage of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Portugal and the Patronage of the European Commissioner for Education, to help draft the 'Education for Shared Society' Agenda.
WLA - CdM defined a shared society as "one in which everyone has a sense of belonging and shared responsibility, shielded from dynamics of social exclusion, inter-group tensions, and violence.” They began their Shared Societies Project (SSP) over a decade ago as a part of their mission to build peace and democracy and have not switched their focus to education.
The overarching topic of the Policy Dialogue, “Education for Shared Societies”, refers to the role of education as an essential lever to build inclusive democratic societies, with the freedom to express their differences in a common search for social cohesion.

The event involved over 150 participants identified as key actors for social change, including; policy-makers, expert practitioners, educators, youth leaders, media, private sector representatives, and civil society.
The UN 2030 Agenda was used as a point of reference, and the Working Group formulated three significant conclusions.
Dialogue 1: Education for Preventing Violent Extremism
Dialogue 2: Inclusive Education for Migrants, Refugees and IDPs
Dialogue 3: Digital Resiliency for Shared Societies
WLA - CdM hopes to foster inclusion, social cohesion and new proposals to leverage it’s members to actively engage in the key recommendations and conclusions reached at this event.
