Dr.Chau Chak Wing on his philosophy behind sustainable and balanced philanthropy

In a new opinion piece for ProBono Australia, Dr.Chau Chak Wing shared his philosophy

behind his philanthropy, and the importance of achieving balance in preserving the past,

stablising the present and nurturing the future.

Dr.Chau highlighted the need for philanthropists to step up in light of

the COVID-19 pandemic and its implications on the livelihoods of Australians.

At an unprecedented time in which so many have been robbed of the opportunity to support a neighbour or good cause, the message is clear; those who can, should.

With the pandemic bringing to light the instability of future investments,

Dr.Chau emphasised the importance of diversifying support to include the past and present,

citing his continued support for Soldier On Australia as “some of [his] most fulfilling work.”

Dr.Chau also noted the significance of the arts and cultural industries

as an opportunity to “invest in the future by setting their sights on the past”

by contributing to long term growth of Australia’s annual economy.

A recent example of which being a collaboration I was fortunate to be a part of with the University of Sydney to give Sydney its newest museum. The museum will housethe largest collection of historical antiquities in the southern hemisphere. This is an example of an investment that I believe will not only sustain the lessons of our rich history through education, but will bridge a divide between past, present and future for generations to come.

—— Dr. Chau Chak Wing

He focused on contributions to the educational landscape as particularly

fulfilling opportunities to nurture, shape and pioneer the future, referencing his

award-winning sustainable and innovative Dr Chau Chak Wing Building

at the University of Technology, Sydney.

While this is an important reflection, to contribute meaningfully to benefit our Australian society we must be willing to simultaneously nurture the country’s rich past and turbulent present in order to ensure a promising future. That’s why I am looking forward to continuing to contribute through my foundation to causes that will help Australia emerge stronger from this devastating pandemic.
